It’s been quite some time since I posted an update on what has happened since our house burned down a couple of months ago. The past few months has been quite busy and we really wanted to move back home before the year ends. Anyway, we were able to receive some insurance funds and it was enough for some projects such as having the house inspected to determine which parts of the house need to be demolished and which areas can still be repaired and renovated. A huge part of the funds we received went to the new roof that was installed and to the new electrical wirings for the whole whole.
There are still a lot of things that need to be renovated and we are saving up for that. We are looking for ways on how we can lower the costs which can be tricky since the prices of materials and home fixtures change a lot. We are also looking online for ideas on how we can maximize our funds and where we can find the materials and fixtures that we need such as bathroom fixtures and cabinet/closet organizers at considerably lower prices. We found some high quality cherry veneer wood online that we’re planning to purchase (we hope we’ll be able to save enough for them).
Anyway, we have decided to move back home a couple of weeks ago because we will be able to save more if we won’t be paying for rent anymore (we were renting a house while we were waiting for our insurance claim to be processed). We can just use the money for our home renovation project. We know that it will be a long process but we know that in time, we will be able to finish everything.
Our family has been going through some trying times these past couple of weeks that going through our ‘normal’ daily activities has been quite hard. It has also been a struggle emotionally (and financially as well). December of last year has been particularly difficult because my father died and then two weeks after that, our house was ravaged by fire on New Year’s Eve. We lost our house and everything in it. All our possessions, the memories with that house, were gone in an instant. We have been, during these past couple of weeks, trying hard live as normally as we could with what we have left.
It is difficult, yes, but I know that we can get through this. We are blessed to have our family and friends as well as ‘strangers’ who are able to extend whatever help they can offer. They also continue to include us in their prayers and it is something that we are truly grateful about.
While we may have ‘lost’ all our material possession, there are still so many things that we are thankful for.
Here’s to a new year and to new beginnings.
I truly am, excited about what God has in store for us.
It’s already the second week of October and like most students nowadays, our children are already looking forward to their sem break. But first, they have to prepare for their finals next week. They have been doing well so far and have been getting good grades.
Our eldest is adjusting well in his new school and has been included in the shortlist of students on the dean’s list. If he is able to maintain his good grades and do well in his finals, he will be eligible for a scholarship next semester. We are glad that he continues to excel at school particularly in his major subjects (he has actually been named programmer of the week for four consecutive weeks, if I’m not mistaken). Our youngest is also doing well, he is the top 3 student in his class. His teacher said that she is impressed by how well our son is able to balance his studies and his extra curricular activities. She also acknowledged his leadership abilities. As parents, we’re very thankful that our children remain focused on their studies. We can only continue to guide them and pray for them so that they continue to excel in whatever they do.
This early though, we are already thinking of what to give them for Christmas. We want to give them something special. We want something that they could really appreciate and something that they could use. We are considering a number of things – like a guitar or a compact digital camera. We still have time to look around for appropriate gifts and of course, enough time to save for them …haha. I have actually been looking at different shopping websites to see the latest gift items (I am also looking at Christmas decors at this site). Hopefully, we can find what we want just in time for the holidays.
It’s the weekend once again and I can’t believe that it’s already the last weekend of February. Before we know it, another school year is over for the kids and of course, it means vacation time for them. So, what are your plans for the weekend? Whatever your plans are, I hope you’ll get to spend as much quality time as you can with your family (and also get as much as rest as you need after that hectic week at work).
Our family is particularly excited because we are going on a trip this week; it’ll be some sort of a reunion for us. Our youngest brother, who has been working overseas for the past two years, is here on a one month vacation and he has decided to treat the whole family to a three-day vacation to the beach. It’ll actually be the first time that we’re going on a trip as a family so we’re really looking forward to it not just because we are going to a world famous tourist destination but mostly because of the opportunity to spend time together as a family. This weekend will be about preparing everything that we will need and making sure that we will not forget anything especially our travel documents. Although our kids will prepare their own stuff, I will be double checking them to make sure that they will bring only what’s necessary and that they wouldn’t forget any of their personal stuff. Knowing them, I’m sure they will only start packing a day or two before our trip. They are mostly likely to spend their Saturday playing video games (since they are only allowed to use their XBox during weekends) or surfing online (probably chatting with their friends on Facebook, watching the latest movie trailers online or browsing online to look for items that interest them like the excellent epiphone electric acoustic guitar that they saw at an online music store).
Anyway, I hope that however you decide to spend your weekend, I hope you get to spend it with the people that matter most to you.
