The weather is turning colder, and the days are getting shorter. As the temperatures drop, flu viruses and colds make the rounds each year, which means that getting sick is practically unavoidable. What’s more, most people hit by winter illnesses are contagious before symptoms emerge. However, preparing for illnesses can help prevent them from snowballing into something worse. Accordingly, several actions can help fend off germs to help keep your family as healthy as possible this winter.
Winterizing Your Family
While it’s virtually inevitable that someone in your family will experience an illness this winter regardless of well-intended prevention measures, best practices recommend employing a variety of germ-fighting strategies. Keep reading to discover the top five secrets that can help your family stay healthy and happy this winter.
- Avoid immunity blasters. The carbohydrates found in sugar can suppress the immune response for up to five hours. Simple sugars reduce white blood cells, rendering an inability to protect against bacterial and viral infections. For instance, the sugar levels in orange juice surpass those of most other fruit juices. Refined sugars can also produce negative moods.
- Revolutionize the lunchbox. Think outside the traditional lunchbox and keep it simple to escape the lunchtime rut. Pack several healthy and small choices that combine to create a whole meal by considering three or four complementary ingredients, such as a handful of crackers, cherry tomatoes, grapes, sliced meats and chunks of cheese.
- Enjoy the cold. Nature Deficit Disorder is a result of spending too much time inside. The therapeutic effects of spending time outside include a reduction in anxiety, obesity, and depression. In fact, routine exposure to allergens can help build a healthy immune system.
- Institute playdates for everyone. Just as children enjoy playdates, adults also need to spend time with friends. Humans were not meant to hibernate. Set aside time to grab lunch with a co-worker or meet a friend at the gym. Establishing social routines are powerful mood enhancers. Social bonding creates a sense of closeness with others that can boost endorphins and suppress serotonin.
- Perform a sleep check. Lack of sleep is a national epidemic, and the consequence can be severe. Sleep deprivation can affect academic achievement and cognitive skills, and it is linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Make sleep a priority by creating an environment that values sleep and is conducive to it by establishing a sleep routine for everyone.
Everyone braces for allergies and sickness when fall arrives because that is when adults and children are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses. It’s vital to provide protection for your lungs in the cold winter months as shown in this infographic.

Boosting Immunity Naturally
The immune system defends against disease-causing microorganisms. To function properly, it requires harmony and balance. The first line of defense is adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, controlling your blood pressure, and getting adequate sleep. The immune system and your entire body function better when healthy-living strategies bolster and shield them from environmental assaults.
Oral hygiene is an important part of our overall well being. Choosing the best dental clinic is as important as choosing health care facilities for our other health care needs. When you move in to a new community, finding the best health care and dental care providers that has the most competent Salt Lake City Dentist should be on top of your to-do list.
There are certain things that you can do if you want to find the best dental clinic in your area. You can start by searching online for information about the various dental clinics that can be found within your community and in nearby areas. Visit their websites and learn about them and the various services that they offer. You can compare their services and fees. Most websites also provide information about their dentists and other dental staff to show that they have highly qualified staff that can perform various dental procedures. You should also read the various testimonials of previous and present clients so that you will have an idea of whether they are able to provide the quality of service that they have promised to their patients. Take into consideration the manner in which they resolve customer complaints. This will give you an idea of how much they value their patients.
Once you have created a shortlist of clinics that you think offers the high quality of dental services that you and family needs, you can choose to visit their clinics personally. You will be able to get a feel of their whole facility and see the various dental tools and equipment that they use. You will also have a feel of how they manage their clinic and how they treat their patients. You can also choose to book for an appointment with a particular dental clinic and undergo a simple dental procedure such as oral prophylaxis just so you can determine whether you are comfortable with the dentist. If you have younger children who may be about apprehensive about any type of dental procedure, you can book for an appointment and have them talk to the dentist. Encourage them to ask whatever questions they may have about the dental procedure or about the various tools and equipment that they see in the clinic. This will allow them to be less anxious about letting a ‘new’ dentist work on their teeth.

At the school where our children go to, it is required that students undergo dental checkups at least once a year. Students won’t have their clearance at the end of the school year if they can’t show proof that they have indeed visited the dentist. They can choose to visit a local Salt Lake City Dentist or the school’s resident dentist.
I remember when our eldest son was still in preschool and he had to visit the dentist, I was anxious about how he would react when he’s actually inside the dentist’s office. Even though we have been teaching him about how to take care of his teeth, he hasn’t seen a dentist before and we were worried that he would be like the other kids who would end up crying. To make sure that it doesn’t happen, we explained to him what a dentist is and what it is that he does. We also made him visit the dental office a few days before his actual dental appointment. We wanted him to be comfortable at the dental office and not feel intimidated with all the dental equipment and tools that he sees. It also helped that the dentist was very friendly and made our child feel more at east about the whole thing. He explained what he would be doing when he cleans his teeth and he even showed the tools that he would be using. He also explained why it’s important to go to the dentist regularly. Since then, we never had any problems with any of our children when it comes to all their dental appointments. Unlike other children who gets anxious about their trip to the dentist, our children are actually looking forward to it since they know that it is an essential part of proper dental care. They have a basic idea of what the health risks are when one neglects to take care of his teeth and has poor dental hygiene.
Our youngest is due for another visit to the dentist this year. He’s actually supposed to have his regular oral prophylaxis procedure last month but we never got around to setting an appointment because we got so busy. I have to remember to call his dentist tomorrow to set an appointment for this weekend.

Sitting in an office chair for hours each day may seem like a less strenuous job for other people. Some even think that office work is ideal only to those who are not capable of performing physically demanding jobs. This is a misconception because office workers just like any other person holding a full time job face their own sets of challenges and even health risks.
I remember when a neighbor learned that I work part-time online, she commented that I must have the easiest job in the world because all I have to do is sit and work on my computer. She’s not aware of the demands of the job that make it as challenging as other professions. Aside from working under pressure, meeting the demands of the clients and making sure that deadlines are being met, there all also physical challenges to working long hours each day sitting in front of the computer.
Just like any other regular office worker, having the proper equipment is important. The right equipment will allow office workers to do their tasks more efficiently and finish them on time. This includes having the right office. Sitting for long hours each day can take a toll on one’s spine and back. Having an office chair with ergonomic design or even the more luxurious eames lounge chair can help provide the spin and the back the support that they need. Although we each have our own specific needs, there are some basic things that we need to consider in choosing an office chair. This includes the materials used for the chairs, the seat height and the design and size of the backrest. The backrest should be easily adjustable to the angle that is preferred by its user. It must also be wide enough to provide support to one’s back. An office chair that can easily rotate is also preferred so that one can turn around or reach different areas of his desk without straining too much. This will prevent the usual back pains that are brought about by using the wrong chair. Are you planning on setting up your own home office? Then an ergonomic chair should be on top of your must-have list.
